Multi Club Ownership

This page was last updated on

There has been a rise in multi-club ownership across the footballing world and its impact is only just being felt. The biggest of these empires is the 'City Football Group' who own clubs across 9 leagues spearheaded by their flagship aquisition Manchester City Other well known entities are the Red Bull group and the 777 group.

The real question is will multi-club ownership ever be able to challenge the status quo of the most established European Leagues. Its too early to say but the answer right now seems to be 'maybe'. Girona a recent addition by the CFG threatened for a while to take on Real Madrid during the 2023-24 La Liga season, and Braga are getting closer to the Big Three in the Portuguese league.

The real headache will come for organisers of European inter league competitions, where clubs owned by a single entity could face each other, although it seems a precident has alreayd been set by RB Leipzig and Reb Bull Salzberg having already faced each other.
